When Pediatric Chiropractic Care Saves Lives

IT’S 7:40 A.M. ON A FRIDAY MORNING, and as I walk up to the front door of my office I am met by a distraught mother holding a crying two-week-old baby girl, “Ana.” I kindly greet the new mother and can tell by the look in her tired eyes that she has been praying for this moment and the hope of some answers for her daughter.

After my staff helps her complete the usual pediatric intake forms she and the baby are brought into a room for consultation and examination. I am informed by the mother that she had a complicated delivery in which the baby was “stuck” in the birth canal and had to be quickly delivered via vacuum-assisted delivery. Baby Ana had a visible caput succedaneum, was in discomfort and instantly started to cry when anyone tried to touch her face or neck.

The mother states that the baby has been placed on medication for the past two weeks as she cries incessantly and only manages to sleep 20-30 minutes at a time, which usually happens only under heavy sedation from medication. The mother goes on to state that Ana seems to have no head control and can’t turn her head to the right without bloodcurdling, shrieking screams. The hospitalists are calling it “extreme torticollis” and are even suggesting surgery to cut the child’s sternocleidomastoid muscles so the baby can rotate her head. Lastly, the mother states that breastfeeding has been nearly impossible, and the baby does not latch.

As she hands me this precious little 8-pound baby she says, “Doctor Beau, you are our last hope.”

As I examine the screaming and crying baby, I gently palpate the upper cervical area and find a severely subluxated left lateral atlas, not to mention other cervical vertebral subluxations and a very hypertonic left sternocleidomastoid muscle. After informing and explaining my findings with the mother I ask to adjust the baby. Using a sustained contact with my middle finger on the left atlas I very gently adjust the atlas. Within just a few seconds I feel a major shift and the baby’s eyes widen.

As I look down upon the child’s face, I remove my hands and almost instantly the room falls silent. I look up to the locked eyes of the mother upon me and we both seem to be frozen in time. I can tell she is thinking, “What will happen next?” We both are motionless for what seems like hours but is most likely no more than 30 seconds. The mother walks over and picks up the baby and embraces the child. As the mother kisses Ana’s face she looks up at me with tears running down her face and says, “Thank you. This is the first time in two weeks she has not cried. She looks so peaceful.”

Within minutes, the baby falls into a tranquil sleep in her mother’s arms and I inform the mother that we will follow up in a few days for a checkup.

I telephone the mother that evening and the next day to check on her progress. The mother reports the baby slept 14 hours the night of the adjustment and the next day she reports little to no episodic crying throughout the day. She even notes the baby has been breastfeeding without incident.

To make a long story short, baby Ana did not need surgery. After a couple of adjustments over the course of the next few weeks she completely stopped all her medications, stopped having colic issues, regained full control of her head movement, her caput rescinded, and she is now a happy and growing little girl.

Pediatric scrutiny
Why do I find it so important to tell you this story? Because all across the world right now, especially in places like Australia, providing pediatric chiropractic care to newborn babies like Ana is under scrutiny. Some are calling chiropractic care unscientific and unneeded.

Some of the latest research follows so DCs can be better informed the next time a mother or father asks, “What can chiropractic do for my child?”

According to the American Chiropractic Association, pediatric chiropractic care is on the rise. The number of kids under chiropractic care has more than doubled to 68 million visits annually. Jeanne Ohm of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) states, “Chiropractic care for children offers a family a solid foundation for wellness. Throughout pregnancy, birth and childhood, the chiropractic lifestyle offers choices and benefits for the child’s greater health and well-being.”

Research is also backing up what Ohm is saying. A survey study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Research compared 200 chiropractors’ and 200 pediatricians’ patients to uncover any differences in the health status of children raised, respectively, by chiropractors or pediatricians.

The analysis indicates there is “a definite correlation between chiropractic and superior health.” In fact, this study “has shown that children raised under chiropractic care are less prone to infectious processes such as otitis media and tonsillitis, and that their immune systems are better able to cope with allergens such as pollen, weeds, grasses, etc., compared to children raised under allopathic care.”

Newborn babies and colic
As discussed earlier, a baby with birth trauma or simply a baby with colic who cries several hours a day can make many new parents feel helpless. With nearly 15 percent of newborn babies being diagnosed with colic, the common condition is actually very treatable.

Chiropractic is a safe and natural way to ease colic symptoms and reduce the amount of crying by 50 percent. The long-term benefits of chiropractic care to treat infant colic, such as fewer incidences of waking up at night and temper tantrums, were also documented. According to a study in MIDIRS Midwifery Digest, results show a correlation between chiropractic intervention at the infant stage and improvements in sleep, reduction in discomfort and pain, and improved feeding.

Decreased antibiotic usage
There is also a significantly decreased history of antibiotic use among “chiropractic” children, indicating a lower susceptibility to bacterial infections as a result of their greater immune system response.

But the benefits of chiropractic do not stop at allergies and ear infections. As a child continues to grow we see major health changes, for the positive, for those under chiropractic care:

Increase in sports performance — Any parent of a child who plays sports is always looking for a competitive edge to make their child a better athlete. A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation reported that in just 12 weeks, athletes who were under chiropractic care improved their agility, balance, kinesthetic perception, power and reaction time by 30%.

Decreased anxiety, better learning retention — Many parents are now taking their children to a chiropractor as studies are also showing that children who are under chiropractic care have less anxiety and are more attentive in school. There is also a growing body of evidence suggesting children with ADHD are showing a reduction in symptoms once under chiropractic care.

Long-term health benefits — Many parents are taking their children to the chiropractor because studies have shown that getting adjusted leads to increased quality of life and long-term spinal health benefits.

Childhood issues such as scoliosis, growing pains and asthma are all being reported as improved once a child is under chiropractic care.

So the next time anyone raises questions about chiropractic care for newborns and children, the above-mentioned research should help further the conversation and bring more clarity to the benefits of chiropractic care for children of all ages.

What is Neck Pain?

Most instances of neck pain (and stiffness) are minor and commonly caused by something you did. That is, if you keep your head in an awkward position for too long the joints in your neck can “lock” and the neck muscles can become painfully fatigued. The price you pay for carelessness in how you position your head and neck (say, while working, watching TV, using a computer, reading a book, or talking on the phone with the receiver held against your shoulder and under your chin), is a pain in the neck. You may be one of the many unfortunates who, after a long and tiring day, has “harmlessly” fallen asleep in a chair or in bed with your head propped up, only to awake with a stiff and painful neck. Fortunately, most minor, posture-induced neck pain episodes clear up on their own after rest and efforts not to repeat the offending stresses on the neck.

But neck pain that just won’ t go away after a day or so is a more serious matter. Neck pain that lasts for many days or keeps coming back is a signal that something isn’t right.Disease, an injury (such as whiplash in an auto accident), a congenital malformation, or progressive degeneration that can come with age may be responsible for the more significant pain you experience. An expert must determine the underlying causes of such neck pain. Examination, diagnosis and treatment by a doctor of chiropractic can relieve your mind and may quickly
relieve your pain.

Who suffers from neck pain?

Almost everyone experiences some sort of neck pain or stiffness at one time or another. Because you are human and walk upright, your head is “balanced” atop your spinal column. f the muscles that support your head are not kept strong and in good condition, the up per part of your spinal column is vulnerable to strains and injuries.

Older people, whose joints have been worn by much use over time, are subject to osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative joint disease or DJD). When this form of arthritis hits your back and neck, you f eel it as neck pain that gets worse over time. The pain may radiate into your shoulders and arms, and you may feel numbness or tingling in hands and fingers. Arthritis can also involve symptoms includ ing headaches, dizziness and even grating/grinding feeling when you move your head.It is very important for your chiropractor to examine you to rule out osteoarthritis or identify it and see that it is properly treated.

What can Chiropractic Do?

Doctors of chiropractic have the training and skills to relieve your neck pain, overcome stiffness, and restore the mobility and range of motion of any frozen neck vertebrae. They are devoted to helping you get back to your normal pursuits and start feeling like yourself again.

Perhaps their most important contribution is their ability to bring their specialized diag nostic skills, techniques, and equipment to bear in assessing what is causing your neck problems. Your chiropractor can determine if you have a relatively minor and treatable condition or a more serious underlying condition (from disease, degeneration, or trauma) that may require more intensive, extended treatment or referral to a specialist.

Your chiropractor will ask you for detailed information on your behavior, posture, physical condition, and work and home environment He or she will obtain x-rays and other diagnostic images to pinpoint which of many possible causes is a responsible for your discomfort. Only then will the appropriate treatment be recommended.

Once your normal feeling and function is restored, your chiropractor will be avail able to keep the muscles and joints of your neck and back in optimum condition to prevent recurrence of neck pain and related life-restricting symptoms. Courtesy of Chiroweb.com

Dr. Cynthia and Dr. Sal run a family friendly practice. Often, you will even see their daughter, Frances, help out with an adjustment!

Dr. Cynthia graduated from Life University in 2000 with a Doctorate in Chiropractic. She had known since the age of 10 that she wanted to be a chiropractor. Her inspiration was Dr. Ralph Ungerank in Arkansas where she grew up. He helped her brother to overcome bronchitis, numbness in both arms with her mother, and alleviated her own headaches with his care.

Dr. Sal also graduated from Life University with a Doctorate in Chiropractic. As a child living in New York, Dr. Sal suffered chronic asthma which he completely recovered from with the help of his chiropractor, Dr. Levin. This was all Dr. Sal needed to jump start his career in the field.

Drs. Cynthia and Sal Mignano are married and have been living in Charleston for almost 5 years. They reside with their two-and-a-half -year old daughter, Frances, and their 4-month-old daughter, Olivia. Dr. Cynthia has family in Charleston and had lived here previously for 7 years before going to college. The two doctors run a family-friendly office, seeing patients as young as 3 days old! They believe that everyone should have the opportunity for spinal wellness regardless of age!

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic a branch of the healing arts which is based, In port, upon the understanding that good health depends on a normally functioning nervous system. (Particularly the spine and the nerves that extend from the spine to all parts of the body. ‘Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word Chlro-praktlkos, meaning “effectlve treatment by hand”

Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment. As chiropractors, we address diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly. They also place an emphasis on nutritional, and exercise programs, wellness and lifestyle modifications for promoting physical and mental health. While we make no use of drugs and surgery, Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) do refer patients for medical care when that type of Intervention Is needed.

What to expect your first visit:

The first thing the DC will do is ask about any major health issues that you are concerned about. The DC will ask about your family history, your job, and any other question to help determine the cause of your discomfort so that they can find the be,t method for treating your problem. A physical exam will be conducted and may Include a spinal examination and analysis, x-rays or other diagnostic procedures. All of these are important components in developing your health profile.

Once the problem has been identified the DC will begin care by way of adjustments or manipulation as well many other techniques specific to your condition. DC’s spend years learning how to perform manipulations and other spinal procedures to be able to administer specific and appropriate adjustments. (Information courtesy of Chiroweb.com)

Who are we?

Drs. Cynthia and Salvatore Mignano have been running a family friendly practice on James Island since 2001. Both doctors graduated from Life University with a Doctorate In Chiropractic.
They see patients as young as three days old, those in their golden years and everyone In between. They believe that everyone should have the opportunity for spinal wellness regardless of age.

What is colic?

Infantile colic was first described as indigestion. Whi le different diagnostic criteria have emerged since then, there has never been complete agreement on what colic is, what causes it, or how to treat it. The most widely accepted definition of colic today is “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from O to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 day sa week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.”

Who suffers from Colic?

It has been widely estimated that between 8% and 49% of newborns suffer from colic, or an estimated average of 22% of all newborns who suffer from colic at some time. The condition is regarded as self -limiting, disappearing spontaneously at three months of age; however, studies have shown that many cases of colic will persist until six and even 12 months of age, causing considerable distress and frustration for both children and parents.

What are some of the symptoms of colic?

The most common symptom of colic is “excessive crying” more hours of crying and more stretches of crying per day than non symptomatic children. The crying may also have a higher frequency/pitch than normal babies. Other possible symptoms include motor unrest (flexing of the knees against the abdomen, clenching of the fists, and extension or straightening of the trunk, legs, and arms).

What causes foot problems?

Your feet are extremely complex structures composed of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and skin. They may develop certain disorders (some of which originate in other parts of the body) They are also subject to injuries and other problems caused by normal wear and tear over years of supporting the weight of your body and making it possible for you to stand, walk, run, and jump.

The most obvious symptoms of foot trouble are pain and dysfunction (limping, favoring one foot or the other, and/or inability to put weight on the heel and/or the toes). Foot pain can be due to ill-fitting, inappropriate footwear that cramps you feet; injuries that keep you from walking well or at all; sprains which stretch or tear ligaments (which connect bones) and stress fractures of bones in the foot, which can result from accidents or overuse while engaging in sports or exercise. Just as foot disorders may originate elsewhere in the body, problems experienced in the feet can cause diff icul ties in other parts of the body.

How can foot problems endanger other parts of your body?

Foot pain and dysfunction caused by illness or injury can force you to modify your gait (the way you walk) and create significant stresses on the joints of your legs, hips, and lower spine. Your feet are the foundation for your entire body. When they suffer from pain, misalignments, malformations, and malfunctions, your whole body is placed in jeopardy. Even without pain, foot dysfunction can cause your whole body to overcompensate, which can lead to back pain and even headaches, not to mention the emotional stress of discomfort and limitations on movement that can spread from the feet upward.

What Causes Shoulder And Arm Pain?

The cause of many instances of shoulder or arm pain is obvious. You do something to injure the arm or shoulder and immediately f eel pain. Or you begin feeling the pain a day or so later. You may have broken a bone or dislocated your shoulder. Perhaps you strained tendons or ligaments by carrying too much weight for too long, by lifting something that was too heavy, overreaching or overexerting you arm as when playing sports when you’re out of shape or by keeping your arm in an awkward position, or even by sleeping on the shoulder. The resulting pain may range from an annoying ache to acute pain that makes it hard for you to use the injured arm. Fortunately, the majority of such injuries are seldom critical.

But there are other, less-obvious causes of shoulder or arm pain. Each is distinguished by where it is felt, whether it comes on suddenly or over time, when it is at its worst, if the pain extends to other joints in your body, and if other symptoms such as swelling, numbness, tingling, fever, fatigue, and insomnia accompany the pain. The causes of shoulder and arm pain include tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, and gout. Such pain may also result from a reaction to medications such as penicillin, anti-anxiety drugs, and oral contraceptives. Whiplash injuries, common in auto accidents, can also cause shoulder and arm pain.

Shoulder and arm pain may be referred from some other region of the body, as when someone experiencing a heart attack feels pain in the left shoulder and down the left arm. The pain may also be referred from nerves associated with the joints in the upper spine or “trigger points” in the back, which are particularly responsive to chiropractic spinal adjustments designed to treat such problems.

What is otitis media?

It is a middle-ear inflammation, usually caused by an infection that blocks the Eustachian tube. The resulting pain is highly distressful to young children…and their parents.

Who suffers from it?

Otitis media is extremely common – seen most often in children 6 to 36 months of age. Up to one third of the child population will have 6 or more episodes before starting school, and some can have up to 12 episodes in a year.

What should I be concerned about?

Every year in the United States, approximately 30 percent of children under age three receive antimicrobial (antibiotic) treatment for acute earache. In fact, treating ear aches is the most common reason for outpatient use of antibiotics.

But scientific studies have shown little evidence of shorter duration of symptoms, fewer recurrences or better long-term outcomes for children given antibiotics for their acute otitis media than for those who did not receive the medication. Moreover, researchers have found that giving so many children so much antibiotic medication poses a serious risk to the youngsters and to their community. It promotes the emergence of strains of microbes that are resistant to the very antibiotics that are being used.

Dr. Robert E. Frash Jr./ 56 Years Old I was referred to MFCC by a neighbor.
When I came to MFCC about six months ago, I had severe lower back pain that radiated around to my left hip. It was difficult or nearly impossible to do nearly anything. I was virtually bed ridden. I could not walk more than short distances.

I had seen an orthopedic and a neurological surgeon. I was told surgery was not a realistic option because there were three herniated disks (L2-L3-L4). They suggested physical therapy and steroid injections. I tried everything but nothing seemed to work.
My only pain relief came with strong opiate medication, which I had to wait on until bedtime because I could not work under their influence.

I had doubts about chiropractic solutions because of poor previous experiences.

However, my experience at MFCC was different from the outset. I met with Dr. Sal, who was patient and caring. Upon a review of my MRI, he told me he could definitely help me. He even said that perhaps eventually he could get me back to full mobility.

The path to physical recovery has been long but largely fruitful. I am pleased to report that I now walk over two miles practically every day. The pain is not completely gone but it is much more manageable. Moreover, it is unbelievably gratifying to know that a session with Dr.Sal or Dr. Cynthia will significantly alleviate my pain.

I could not be more pleased with MFCC and Ors.Sal and Cynthia. They are highly skilled. They remain current on new strategies and are always open to alternate solutions. They are sincerely committed to their patients care and well being. Honestly, without their care, I am not sure how I would manage.

Yours truly,
Dr. Bob Frash
